Fifth and sixth grade artists looked at several examples of paintings by Spanish artist Joan Miro. We discussed his unique style and identified several repeated shapes and motifs. Students planned their pieces before they started to paint. Then they built their paintings layer by layer.
Here are some of Miro's paintings that we looked at:

KEITH HARING MOVING FIGURES
Third and Fourth grade artists looked at the artist Keith Haring's work. Haring is a well known pop-artist, who works in bold colors and with simple figures.
Here are some pieces of Haring's work:
Students practiced drawing their friends in different poses. Like Keith Haring, we kept the figures plain and simple, without faces or clothing. This project helped to build our figure drawing skills.
When each artist had several figures he or she liked, we painted them in color-wheel order and cut them out. Some students chose to add Haring's signature motion lines.

CANADIAN FIRST NATIONS ART
Third and fourth grade artists looked at artwork from Canada's First Nation tribes, specifically the Haida. This project tied in with the school-wide study of Arctic regions, as well as the Vancouver Olympic games. Students chose an animal to represent in a style similar to the Haida work we viewed. Here is a salmon painted by a member of the Haidi tribe.

VERMONT FLAGS
What do you love about our beautiful state of Vermont? Fayston Elementary artists made original Vermont flags showing our favorite things about the Green Mountain State. These flags were completed just in time to be displayed at tonight's Vermonte Carlo. It is so inspiring to see what each student loves about his or her home!
